Fats, Oil and Grease (FOG) Program

FOG is the acronym used to refer to Fats, Oils and Grease that enter the sewer system from homes, apartments, restaurants, industry, and public facilities. FOG is any combination of animal fats, and/or vegetable oils that are used to prepare food or are found in food, all of which can severely damage your sanitary sewer system.

FOG is a byproduct of cooking and is found in baking goods, butter, lard, margarine, shortening, cooking oil, dairy products, food scraps, fried foods, gravy, mayonnaise, meat fats, salad dressings, sauces, and sour cream.

When discharged into sewer lines, FOG accumulates and sticks to pipe walls, causing clogs in the sanitary sewer system. The most significant sources of FOG are residential homes and Food Service Establishments (FSEs) where cooking oil and residual grease from dishes are improperly disposed of in drains. CUB is asking our customers to help with keeping FOG out of the sanitary sewer to provide uninterrupted wastewater service for all our customers.

Clinton Utilities Board (CUB) has a FOG Program with the purpose of preventing sanitary sewer system blockages, obstructions, and overflows due the contribution and accumulation of FOG from customers wastewater discharges. CUB’s FOG Program consists of periodic inspections of Food Service Establishments (FSEs) to determine compliance with the CUB’s Wastewater Rules and Regulations and to gather records of routine maintenance of grease interceptors and grease traps. CUB conducts periodic inspections of sewer lines, grinder pumps and pumping stations in residential areas with FOG related problems.

CUB has developed its FOG Program along with these online guides to make it easier for residential and FSE sewer customers. Please feel free to contact us at (865) 220-6241 with any questions regarding CUB’s FOG Program. Please click on the links below for additional information:
